July 11: Salt Lake City to Oregon

Hello!

Jane and Kristi left Salt Lake City at 6 am, stopping for gas at Wendover (just past these salt flats).

I-80 was smooth sailing to Winnemucca. As we drove, we noticed a bunch of things on the side of the road- like gravel. (Spiders?) and then we passed a highway warning sign that said road may be slick due to crickets. WTF, right? Damn locusts- first sign of the apocalypse. Eeeek.

In Winnemucca, we gassed up around 10:30 (Pacific time) and turned north on hwy 95 toward Sheldon national wildlife refuge. We made it to virgin valley campground by 12:30. Kristi discovered this campground (middle of NOwhere) last summer. Cute little warm spring pool to swim there). But it was too early for us to camp (also, too hot/not much available shade)… so we pressed on to the National Forest near Lakeview, Oregon.

Definitely by Lakeview, we were ready to stop driving. Another fuel stop there and jane found a camp site about 15-20 minutes southwest of Lakeview (called Drew creek CG off of Dog Lake lane). Cutie pie campground near the creek (which Kristi skinny dipped in- welcome to Oregon!). Perfect hammock trees, and campsite set up! Free. And no one else here. Perfect!

We planned a lovely dinner- pasta primavera with Italian sausage, Caesar salad, Italian bread toasted and…Janie’s famous Aperol spritz - “bringing a little bit of Italy to the campgrounds of Oregon.”

One question on our minds this morning is how to recharge the Ryobi mister we bought in SLC to help with the 100+ degree temps we are encountering on these first 2 days of the trip. The shade of the forest campsite here helped quite a bit, but even so, it e used the fan and the mister enough that we depleted its battery.  Jane spent the morning reading her Scope owners manual to see if the inverter could handle charging a ryobi battery.

Now on to Valley View Vineyard (west of Ashland)...

Some of Sara's photos I need to organize in the other days' posts...  The mug shot is priceless!
